What Causes Frequent Bowel Movements In An Infant?

My 6 month old baby is passing stools at least 10 to 12 times a day since past one week. The color of stool varies from yellow to green and he passes stools as sopn as he takes milk (formula milk) or any semi solid introduced to him recently. Due to frequent stools he has developed rashes in and around anus area. Please suggest some good and effective medicine. Our paediatrician suggested tufpro and flagyl.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your child seem to have a disbacteriosis of his digestive tract. It's very common among children. I suggest you to start giving him Tufpro that is a probiotic, and helps the the normal bacterial flora of intestine to stabilize.

If your child has taken any antibiotic treatment lately, then diarrhea might be related to an antibiotic reaction, and you should also give Flagyl, if not then I suggest you only to give Tufpro for some days.

You should also prevent dehydration:
- continue the formula feeding
- try giving oral rehydration solution
- give him smaller and more frequent feedings
- you can try giving him strained banana and rice cereals
- applesauce (not sliced apples) has an antidiarrheic and hydrating effect

If diarrhea continues, and it doesn't improve, I suggest you also to consider lactose intolerance, and try to give him lactose free formula milk.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Suela Gjata,
