Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Frequent Bowel Movement With Abnormal Stool?
my dad is 74 years old and has decompensated liver cirrhosis. Hospitalized in 2016 for HE, ascites and edema. He has lost all upper body mass and very frail looking. He does not have diarrhea but goes to bathroom in the excess of 10 times a day he said his bowel movements are jelly glue like. What is going on?
That description of a jelly glue-like stool indicates that the stool is mucoid or contains mucus. What calls to mind if elderly patients of mine report this symptom with frequent bowel movements are inflammatory diseases of the bowels such as crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. However, such symptoms could also indicate colon cancer.
First thing i would counsel you on is a visit to a gastroenterologist, a physician who treats diseases of the gastrointesinal tract. This doctor would perform a procedure called colonoscopy which involves use of a flexible tube with a camera at one end. This tube is passed through the anus to visualize the intestines and take samples to further define the diagnosis.
Treatment would depend on the cause detected. So, a visit to a gastroenterologist is the first step.
I hope i have answered your question.
Warm regards.
