What Causes Frequent And Small Bowel Activity Movements Post An Eye Surgery?

My Father, who is 82 years old has had very frequent, very small, bowel activity movements. this has been going on for more than 4 week s. I can tell that it is worrying him. Since January (the beginning) He has undergone eye surgery to both eyes and in between those, he had some skin cancer remove from his chest, He says that the fecal matter is very soft, and no bigger than the end of his pinky finger, and has to go at least five time through the day and he wakes up through the night hours to get up and use the toilet. As little as he goes each time, he does not think that it is emptying him out the way it should. Do you think we need to get my dad in for a colonoscopy test. Do you think this is cause for alarm?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about your Father who is old, 82 years old; had eye surgery on both and thence started the stool problem of passing small but soft and frequent stools which he has to wake up even in the night for.
Such a problem is usually due to intestinal infection and might have caused by bacterial imbalance caused by antibiotics and other medicines he must have got.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
First of all get the stool tested and blood.
If infection is present give him a course of an antibiotic and metronidazole with long term pre and probiotic. He will be fine.
If no results then further studies like CT scan of the abdomen and colonoscopy may be required.
