General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

It sounds as though you may have caught gonorrhea or chlamydia, which are sexually transmitted diseases. These could have been missed if the doctor did not see that there was a risk, and did not send the swabs specifically for these infections.

What happens on a regular high vaginal swab is that it is cultured for normal infections, which would be useful if you have bacterial vaginosis, or even yeast. However, things like chlamydia and gonorrhea do not grow well in cultures such as these, and therefore needs to be specifically requested at the lab. I usually request for the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing using a urine sample or vaginal swab, which specifically looks for chlamydia and gonorrhea DNA inside the sample, making it a lot more accurate.

The doctor can also choose to treat you while waiting for the result of the test, which is usually an intramuscular injection of ceftriaxone combined with a single high oral dose of azithromycin at 1g.

Hope this helps, and all the best to you.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
