What Causes Foot Swelling In Diabetic Patients?

I am a 58 ye.ar old type II diabetes patient, having no high blood pressure or known heart problems. My right foot has been swollen for at least 5 days. They shrink overnight, but not totally. I recently started working out to help control my diabetes, so I am not certain whats going on. My left foot is also slightly swollen but not in any pain. I used to have these symptoms when having a blood clot in my leg and I would always pass it vaginally. I have been told to start taking baby asprin, because my blood is thicker than normal.

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The swelling may be due to venous disease especially if there is a previous history of blood clot in the leg.
Normally blood goes from the deep veins of the leg into the superficial veins (veins just under the skin) and back up to the heart.

There are valves that prevent it from going back. When a person has a clot, the veins can become damaged and the valves also do not work as well.

This causes blood to build up in the legs especially as a persons moves or stands about during the day.

Normally it is treated with special stockings and also it would be best to prop your feet up at intervals throughout the day.

In very severe cases, surgery for the varicose veins may be needed.

I hope this helps
