What Causes Fluttering Sensation In Abdomen, Fast Heart Beat And Cold Hands?

Sometime in November, I started feeling somewhat. By somewhat, I mean, all of a sudden, I would feel like flutters in my stomach, my heart will be racing (beats fast) and my hands will become cold. I don t feel like fainting but I feel somewhat distant around my surrounding. Usually, I need to drink water and move from that place to calm me down when this happens. Note: this also happens when I see some patterned (close patterns woven on the carpet) or in some angle. Also, If I wear multiple layers of clothing (it is cold here) I will have to usually remove one of them when this happens. I was tired more than usual and I went to doctor. She tested my blood (CBC) and for TSH. My TSH is 6.2 and CBC was normal and well within range. Ahe has prescribed me levothyroxine for hypothyrodism and I have been taking it from Dec11th. I am not sure if this is anything to do with my periods, but I have noticed that near periods time I am overly sensitive to food and wondering if this is anything to do with it.

Hi,

Thank you for your query.

Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid glands produce less thyroid hormones than the body needs. Mostly the hormones regulate bodily processes such as heart rate, blood pressure, heat perception, gastrointestinal function, menstrual cycles etc. In hypothyroidism almost all bodily processes slows down. A patient will experience cold intolerance, slowed heart rate, constipation, weight gain and increased menstrual flow. If your doctor already diagnosed hypothyroidism and prescribed levothyroxine your thyroid function should be assessed for the response to the treatment every 2 months after the treatment until TSH and T4 levels come to the normal range. When normal range of the TSH and T4 is achieved you should be checked annually TSH and T4 levels. Coming back to your question: thyroid hormones (under-produced or overproduced) affect menstrual period and food perception. Please, make an appointment with your doctor and get TSH and T4 levels checked.
I hope I have answered your question. Please, feel free to ask me more in HCM if there is anything else you need to know.

Thank you,
Dr.Malik
