What Causes Finger Numbness And Depression After Heart Valve Replacement Surgery?
In Sept. my husband had aortic & mitral valve replaced (approx. 12-hour surgery) with mechanical valves. As a result, he still has numbness in fingers, no feeling in same fingers, pain along his arms and now is experiencing depression because it doesn t seem to be getting any better. His doctor keeps saying it just takes time for the nerves to heal because of how they were stretched open during surgery for so long. But it s not getting better and the depression is starting to worry me. He now has loss of appetite, and has difficulty sleeping no matter what kind of mattress or pillow is used. Any info or what to do next would truly be appreciated! Thank you so much!
hi thanks for using health care magic, numbness of fingers and arms take time to recover fully , it may takes months. Now for the problem of sleep and loss of appetite i need to know more about his other symptoms like depressed mood, energy level , any loss of interest, so that clinical diagnosis of depression can be made/ rule out. If he is suffering from depression then antidepressants like SSRI can be tried after consulting the doctor. thanks , hope it will benefit you.
