What Causes Fever Alonh With Sweating And High Blood Pressure?

My friend is almost 60. He has had flu=like symptoms for 6 days now. Fever, sweats, occasional shaking and high blood pressure and heart rate. Urine sample is normal. No vomiting and diareaha. Only can control symptoms with Advil bought in Canada that I think is triple strength. Looks puffy at times in the face. THoughts

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi there,

It is quite common to have high blood pressure and heart rate when a person is unwell with a high fever. The shivering and sweats is simply a reaction to the fever spiking up and coming down again in response to the infection or the Advil. Make sure that he takes enough fluids and he is not dehydrated - this would mean at least 2.5 litres in a day if he has no other health problems. It is good that he has had a urine test done, which makes the likelihood of the puffiness being due to a kidney problem less likely.

However, 6 days is quite a long time to be having such high fevers. Since it was not mentioned as to whether a blood test was done, that is the first thing that I would recommend. He needs to have a simple blood count done to see if indeed it is a simple viral flu. Sometimes a pneumonia is also not so obvious in this age group. Other things to be considered is if you are staying in a dengue or malaria prone area, as these can also present this way.

Hope this helps your friend.

Regards,
Dr. Teh
