What Causes Fever Along With Cough And Chest Congestion?

My child tested negative for the flu but is still running a fever since yesterday. It wavers between 100 - 102 F. She is now coughing with some phlegm in her upper bronchial. Should we contact our family doctor for an antibiotic or try and break the fever first?

Breaking the fever will involve breaking the infection first. You didn't write the age of the child.
You can just request the GP for a rapid Streptococcus card test to rule out Strept throat infection. Otherwise the fever is sometimes helpful to fight the infection. Till then just discuss with the GP regarding a prescription for an expectorant-the syrup that causes the sputum from lower respiratory tract to be extruded so that it may not jam the airways. Also ask about possibility of an allergic bronchitis that is so common in spring for which you may need an antiallergic like Loratadine . Finally if the symptoms still persist I would prefer you get any Penicillin group of antibiotics[oral]. Since all these are prescription medications you'll need to discuss the above written things with you GP.
