What Causes Fever After Head Injury?

Hi my daughter bumped her head on the monkey bar while playing at school. she said it's quite painful but there's no bleeding or cut on her head. After 2 days she chilled and have fever but aside from that, there is also a chicken pox outbreak in school and Im worried now what really causes her fever. Thanks!

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. The fever after head injury can occur in children due to

: Severe pain and inflammation at injury site. If she is having sever pain, redness and swelling at injury site, it could be the cause.

: Collection of blood or pus at injury site. Injury can cause blood collection and it may get infected which can cause fever. It is less likely in your daughter as only 2 days have passed. But still, examine her injury site and if you notice soft, fluctuant swelling with redness and pain, it could be the cause.

Treatment includes consult doctor. Only inflammation can be managed by icepacks application, bed rest, anti-inflammatory syrup like Ibuprofen syrup after proper prescription.

While pus may need evacuation and antibiotic therapy like Co-amoxyclav therapy for 5 to 7 days along with painkillers.

Another cause as you mentioned, it could be "Chickenpox". You can suspect it if she is having rashes over her body.

For treatment, you should give her plenty of water to maintain hydration, give Paracetamol syrup for fever after proper prescription. You should show her to Paediatrician for further management. It is self limiting disease. She will recover spontaneously in few days.

Hope it will help you. Thanks.

Take care.
