What Causes Feeling Of Lump In Throat With Chest Pressure And Throat Congestion?

Hi. I am a fairly healthy 44 yr old woman. I recently have been suffering from a feeling of a lump in my throat with chest pressure and lots of phlegm I try to hock up. The lump feeling seems to travel from my lower throat to my upper chest. I don t really have acidy burning or anything. Been going on for 3 days now. Should I ride it out or go see a doctor? The lump sensation won t go away no matter what I do. I try to drink cold water or warm broth which feels good but doesn t get rid of it. Scared!

Dear
Welcome to HCM
We understand your concerns

I went through your details. There are many conditions with which you can have a lump in throat. These conditions are purely physical and you should approach a doctor for evaluation.

But, The travelling lump sensation could be caused by pure obsession and anxiety. Your chest pressure explains the anxiety part. This anxiety lump feeling can occur rarely, frequently, or persist indefinitely. This feeling can precede, accompany, or follow an episode of nervousness, anxiety, fear, and elevated stress, or occur ‘out of the blue’ and for no apparent reason.

The combination of good self-help information and working with an experienced anxiety disorder therapist, coach, or counselor is the most effective way to overcome anxiety and its many symptoms.

Good luck. Take care.
