What Causes Fatigue And Mood Swings After Suffering From Diarrhea?

Hi there, I ve recently been travelling across Thailand and Laos. I developed food poisoning in Laos, I was sick once and had loose stools. That was 2 weeks ago. Since then I have had some loose stools but I am now going regularly with no fluid. I have been feeling extremely fatigued and I m having regular mood swings, I ve start crying for no reason at all. I was prescribed azithromycin which I took for 3 days which didn t work, now the doctor has prescribed me metronidazole 400mg; I am on my second day. I had a blood test, everything is as it should be. I have an underactive thyroid but my TSH levels are perfectly normal. I have no other symptoms, I m eating well, drinking lots of fluid, no fever. I can t go out of the hotel without feeling tired, even though I am getting 10 hour sleeps. These symptoms are very similar to what I got last time I went to Asia, when I arrived in Australia I had a panic attack and ended up in hospital, she gave me what was called the travellers bomb which in turn led to fireworks in my stomach, clearing anything that was there. If anyone could shed some light on what this might be and / or how to treat it I would be extremely grateful. Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Due to loss of fluids and depletion of nutrients from diarrhea, you developed fatigue and restlessness. These usually developed in case of loss of fluids in body from vomiting and diarrheas.

The problem of mood swings can be due to: Change of place as environment, amount of light, temperature and culture of the place can lead to psychological changes in the body and therefore mood swings as well (Your travel history to new places and panic attack as you mention). Another reason is from infection of poisoning and fluid loss over long periods had impacted fluid and nutrient supply to the brain resulting mood swings.

You are advised to take plenty of liquids and soup in the diet.
Take fresh fruits and do early morning walk for fresh air.
I advise you also take probiotic it has an overall good effect on the gut.
I suggest you also get yourself checked by a physician may be you can need some drug therapy that would be initiated after taking your proper history and examination.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
