Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 79 year old mother is in very good health, no medications. She has had 3 episodes in the last 2 years where she just faints. She wakes up knowing where she is,what day it is etc. but is very sleepy and will sleep the rest of the day.
They did MRI which showed nothing unusual. What should we do next. She doesnt know when it will happen and is scared to drive or go places.
Thanks
Fainting all of a sudden in the elderly can be due to low blood glucose (hypoglycaemia) if the brain MRI is normal. Rarely it can be due to vasovagal syncope, a condition where there is sudden blackout due to stimulation of the vagal nerve. Such an incident can also occur due to vertebral basilar insufficiency, where there is reduced blood supply to the posterior brain through the vertebral arteries leading to fainting spells. It is important that she gets tested in detail for any low blood glucose levels and also a carotid and vertebral artery Doppler to study blood supply to brain.
