What Causes Facial Swelling Along With Pain In Jaw Bone?

I am a forty four year old female that has scheduled to have oral surgery on Dec. 2, 2014. I have gone in and done X-rays, had the impressions made for permanent / dentures. I was also given a prescription of Penicillin VK 500 MG to take every 6 hours. I have been following these instructions very carefully. However, during the past 24 hours I have had a huge turn for the worse. I have 2 jaw teeth on the lower left side broken off and my nerves are exposed, on the right hand side I have three teeth broken off with my nerves exposed and I woke up yesterday morning with the whole side of my face swollen and my jaw bone hurting me so bad. From a 1-10 scale it is a 10! I am not able to eat any solid food and it hurts to touch my face. I just need to know if I can get help with this at the hospital? This is absolute agony. Can you please help me? I would be so thankful!

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain swelling over the entire side of face that have broken teeth with nerves exposed seems to be due to infection below the root tips of the teeth causing Pus accumulation leading to formation of Dental Abscess..
I would suggest you to take higher painkillers like TRAMADOL to relieve pain as of now..
You should consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and he can do a thorough clinical evaluation and also advise you x rays for confirming the cause.
In case of abscess he can give you Oral antibiotics like Augmentin and Metronidazole along with Anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen for reducing infection and pain..
Once some swelling and pain reduce he can advise either Root Canal treatment or Extraction for complete resolution..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
