What Causes Extremely Heavy Bleeding With Cramping?

Thank you. I recently turned 50 years of age (Feb.), thought I was going through pre-menopause last year, had no period for almost eight months, since Jan. this year, I have a couple light cycles. As of this Monday, I am bleeding extremely heavy with cramping (I rarely have had cramps throughout my cycles). What s going on, do I need to see a doctor regarding this?

Hi,

First of all do not panic. If you are not using any contraceptive methods then please get morning's first sample of urine tested for pregnancy. In case of any doubt blood beta HCG test and USG will be of help.

Secondly, for your heavy bleeding, please get USG done to know about structural problems if any that are associated with uteus and ovaries. Also, get diagnostic hysteroscopy with endometrial biopsy done to know more about the cause of heavy bleeding.

Presently, I will suggest use of Tablets containing Tranexamic acid and Mefenamic acid as needed to control your bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
