What Causes Extreme Constipation And Lower Abdominal Pain In A Teenager?
My 12 yr old son woke up with lower abdominal pain. He was in tears which is unusual for him. He said he hasn t had a bowel movement in at least 4 days. His urine was light yellow. I have him drinking water now. He doesn t have a fever, no pain in any other place and nausea. I understand he is constipated but why pain in the front lower abdomin? He said it s most comfortable to pull his knees up. What should I do next? He is not overweight, good health, no other meds.
Constipation would cause pain particularly in the lower abdomen though usually towards the left. If there was an infection of the bladder, which is located towards the center of the lower abdomen, then there would be urinary symptoms such as discomfort on urination or frequency of urination.
The most common cause of constipation is related to the diet but in some cases it can be due to more serious causes such as an obstruction of the bowel or condition of the spine. With no previous history of constipation , it maybe be best for him to be assessed to rule out a more serious cause though it is unlikely.
I hope this helps
