What Causes Excessive Thirst And Excessive Urination At Night?

My husband, age 64 has been experiencing excessive urination at night approximately over 2 quarts of urine passed. Within the past two month, he has lost over 10 pounds without trying although he walks several miles a few days a week. He is also often thirsty.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.
I've gone through your query and I can understand your anxiety.

With your husband's history it shows he is suffering from " Diabetes mellitus". His age, increased urination, increased thirst, weight loss all are suggestive of the same.

I advice you to do
- FBS/PPBS to know the levels of blood sugar
- Urine sugar & ketone bodies
- Diet restriction of sugar products
- Exercise - brisk walk (2-3miles/d)
Baesd on the blood sugar level either injections or oral hypoglycemic agents can be used.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further. Take care.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya V, General and family physician.
