What Causes Excessive Mucus In The Throat And Chest?
What causes an excessive amount of mucous in my throat and upper chest? I have emphysema. Do I need to see my internist for it? I ve been like this for a week now. I cough up yellow, thick phlegm and my nose runs sometimes. My upper lungs rattle with congestion. What do I do? Could you please let me know? No fever. Thanks. Theresa

It is possible that you may have an upper respiratory tract infection but with a history of COPD, you should be assessed to make sure that it is a simple viral infection and antibiotics are not needed.
In some cases, medications to break up the mucus in the airways (a mucolytic) and a decongestant (to help with the nasal symptoms), would be enough.
You may not need to see your internist, your GP should be able to determine if you need specialist attention
