Psychiatrist 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query at HCM. I am Dr Alok Sinha, MD (Psychiatry) from India.
I have read your question carefully and I will try my best to answer your query.

Look, erection of penis is a natural phenomenon when a relaxed mind feels sexual arousal. Firstly you are required to know little about the physiology of erection. Due to arousal in mind, certain brain cells get activated which in turn send signal to penis via spinal cord. Penis has erectile tissues which act to maintain an erection upon getting these neuronal signals.

If your mind is not relaxed and pre-occupied with some worries/fear/ stressful memories etc then it may not prepare itself for the sexual act. As a result it will not send signals to sex organs thus no erection.

Masturbation for a long time does not produces any erectile dysfunction.
It is because of stressed mind that you failed to achieve erection.

There may be lack of proper privacy, limitation of time, pressure to perform well in front of girl friend, memories of past failures during sexual act, anxiety about your current performance, poor self confidence etc that may preoccupy your mind. These negative thoughts cause anxiety and sympathetic over-activity. Due to this sympathetic over-activity, brain stops sending signal to spinal cord and penis. Thus results in no erection. This creates further anxiety and thus a vicious cycle is sets in.

There is unlikely any other cause of it in a young person like you. You also accept being depressed because of it. If a person like you comes to my clinic then I suggest them to relax, stop worrying about performance, and assess him for any anxiety/depressive illness. I advise you to get professional help of a psychiatrist who may assess you and put you on psychotherapy or some anxiolytic/antidepressant medications for sometime for cure.

Believe me, it is a temporary condition and it may be treated effectively.

Hope it answers your query. I wish you all the best.
