What Causes Episodes Of Shortness Of Breath And Nervousness?

I am diabetic and had symptoms of low blood sugar about two weeks ago , but when I checked my sugars I was at 200, I felt nervous, shortness of breath so I took aspirin and about 20 minutes later I was fine. the left area of my chest felt sore for about two days after that sudden episode. I don t know if I should be concerned as I had another similar episode last night.

Cardiologist 's  Response
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Your symptoms may be just anxiety.

Similar symptoms could also be caused by different disorders like: coronary artery disease or small lung embolism.

So I recommend consulting with your GP for a careful physical examination, a routine blood test, kidney and liver function tests, blood electrolytes, a resting ECG and a chest x ray, to exclude other causes of this symptomatology.

Hope to have been of help!

Best wishes,
Dr. Iliri

Cardiologist Dr. Dr. Meriton Siqeca's  Response
Hello. Thank you for your question and welcome to HCM. I understand your concern.

Diabetes mellitus is a progressive disorder that, among other effects on the human organism, also affects arteries of different calibres. Therefore, it does not spare coronary arteries. I would further inform you that aspirin does not have any effect on relieving the shortness of breath. Also, you should know that diabetes, not only affects arteries, it also causes progressive nerve damage, so even different kind of pain generated by diferrent organ systems can go by without being felt. At this point I would recommend you to do a cardiac check-up: EKG, to evaluate the heart electrical system and whether any pathological process is on the way; an echocardiogram to assess the heart muscle motility and fuctioni also to evaluate other functional parameters of the heart; and a cardiac stress test, to evaluate if there is a possibility of a blockage or narrowing within a coronary artery. If the latter comes back positive, a coronary angiogram is recommended. After you have the test results back, you can further discuss the matter with your cardiologist. Also, you are welcome to contact me again.

I hope I was helpful. Good luck.

Wish you a good health,
Dr. Meriton
