What Causes Enlarged White Taste Bud On The Tongue?

Hi Doctor, I noticed that I have an enlarged, white taste bud on the side of my tongue. I wear a nightguard at night, and at first thought that maybe I'd bit my tongue, but after several nights sleeping without a nightguard, it has not gone away. I've tried a mouthwash with salt water, and eating ice chips for the swelling, but to no avail. I haven't eaten any spicy food and have not burnt my tongue with hot tea. The only thing I have changed recently is my toothpaste brand. Could my tongue be irritated by something in the toothpaste, or do I have thrush? Thanks, Sue

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

An enlarged white taste bud that has not improved with changing of the toothpaste can be due to allergic reaction to the toothpaste..

There are some common ingredients in toothpaste so if it is due to toothpaste you need to start using hypoallergic toothpaste.

It does not seems like Thrush as thrush appears as a cheesy white patch over the tongue surface.

Other causes although can be a mucosal tag or a soft tissue overgrowth causing a Fibroma..

I would suggest you to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation can help in diagnosis and treatment can be planned accordingly..

As of now you should take a soft diet..
Avoid spicy and hot foods and also do not try to remove the growth to prevent pain and infection..

Hope this helps..
