What Causes Enlarged Tonsils?

My son is on an antibiotic for what I thought was strep throat. His tonsil is still very large. He has been on the antibiotic for 4 days. I am beginning to get worried after reading about a swollen tonsil on different websites. The word cancer is being thrown around alot. What else could it be? He doesn t have any other symptoms right now.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your son, age and weight not mentioned, having enlarged tonsils and as usual search on net found out cancer and you got worried as he is under treatment for strep throat and
no other symptoms at the present.
First of all the search in internet gives you the anxiety for the things not preseentt.
Since you have not mentioned the age of your son I take this he is a child and the development of cancers is very rare in children.
The work of tonsil and adenoids is to protect the body from infection by trapping from the nose and oral area and hence they get enlarge and usually start regressing after the age of 10.
Consult your ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation and investigations.
If the medical management does not help to get a cure then tonsillectomy may be considered.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT and General Surgeon
