What Causes Enlarged Thyroid With Nodules?

I have had 2cervical fusions within last 8 years, last year thoracic surgery t-6 7 8. Now I ve found out that my thyroid is enlarged and has nodgules. Could all of the x-rays and surgeries have caused the problem now they want to do a cervical selective root block to try and stop the headaches which I m having since I also have more herniated discs. The cervical selective root block I know that I will be exposed to more radiation that could not be good for my already enlarged thyroid with nodgules, what do I do?

Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thank you for your question.
Thyroid nodules are very common in the population and you are right, the neck irradiation and the family history are the most common causes of the thyroid nodules.
If you were a patient in my clinic i would recommend you some further examinations for your nodules, before you start any treatment for the neck problem.
You didn't mention the dimensions of the nodules, but if they are over 1 cm i would recommend you to do the hormonal profile, than a scintiscan of the thyroid gland and if one of the nodules results cold in scintiscan i would recommend the fine needle biopsy aspiration to rule out the malignancy.
Your doctor would ask you to do tumoral markers also, if there are some specific characteristics present in ultrasound.
I hope this information will help you and i am in your disposal for further informations.
Best wishes,
Dr.Guni
