What Causes Enlarged Spleen, Water Retention On Legs, Around Stomach And Lungs?

My sister has an enlarged spleen and they said some damage to her liver. Her spleen is destroying blood platelets, and she retains fluids in her legs and on her stomach. 7 months ago she was in the hospital because the fluid was not only on her stomach, but filling the lining of one lung. Today she had 3 1/2 liters of fluid removed from her stomach. They just keep an eye on the number of blood plaitlets every 3 months by blood work. They don t want to get the number below 50. What could be causing this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
I appreciate your concern for your beloved sister.

Incomplete data: Age, any other disease, any relevant lab tests.

Suspected liver disease with complications.

After having gone through the problems described in your query, I am of the opinion that she is suffering from the liver disease (? Cirrhosis of the liver) which has caused the accumulation of fluid (water) in her abdomen (stomach) and enlarged spleen with decreased platelet counts and the lining of the lungs as well.

She needs to be treated in a hospital setting for her present condition with water pills (diuretics), nutritional supplements (vitamins, minerals, etc), and of course the cause of reduced platelet counts should be detected and treated accordingly.

Hope to have answered the query.
