What Causes Elevated Triglyceride Level?

My almost 9 year old daughter has been feeling very tired lately after a long sinus infection. Her blood panel showed nothing remarkable other than an extremely elevated triglyceride level. She is only in the 10%tile for weight and 25th for height. She is a very healthy eater--our family doesn't eat red meat. Her brother had mitochondrial disease and our doctor is concerned about her heart. What could cause such a high TG value?

Hello,

Other than genetic patterns, elevated TG can be seen with high sugar, juice, high fructose corn syrup ingestion. Generally, if occurring in someone so young. Has genetic testing been offered to you? Most pediatric cases have a genetic component.

If her Tg levels are >500 she is at risk for pancreatic problems. If your daughter were my patient I would supplement with amylase, bromase, and lipase (digestive enzyme) if she is having floaty stools, gas, bloating and other signs of not absorbing her food (undigested food in stools). She may have to remain on a low fat diet the remainder of her life pending diagnosis of mitochondrial disease. Following up with your physician is important until you have a firm diagnosis and a treatment plan in place.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
