What Causes Elevated Lipase Level?

Hi..my sister-in-law just had her gallbladder removed..she had gallstones..however when the gallbladder was removed there were no stones..we think she may have passed them in the night..she was using the restroom real regularly..Her Lipase was 7000 before surgery and they got it down for surgery....Now 4 days after her surgery.. her Lipase has gone up to 1300 from approximately 150-200..Can u tell me what is going on..there is no blockage of the Pancreas. ..

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi and welcome to Healthcaremagic. Thank you for your query. I am Dr. Rommstein, I understand your concerns and I will try to help you as much as I can.
Lipase is hormone produced by pancreas and its elevation is seen in panceas injury or inflammation. After gallstone surgery there may be small stones that damage pancreas temporarily or obstruct its ducts. This would lead to elevated lipase levels and this is usually temporarily and last for few days and then it stabilizes unless there is complete obstruction which requires another surgery.
I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time.
Kindly regards. Wish you a good health.
