What Causes Elevated Blood Sugar Levels Post Recovery From Flu?

I caught the flu in January. High temp for a week. Sweated off 14 lbs. Drank lots of liquids. At some point I craved sweet drinks. Its may 17 and I ve lost 20 lbs. My appetite is back-but I can t put weight back on. I m 53yrs, 6 and went from 192 to 170. I m consuming approximately 2200-2700 calories a day. Started drinking fluids around the clock 2 weeks ago and urinating every 2 hours. I checked my blood sugar 2 days ago, read 418. Yesterday 433-although I consumed 40 oz. Of orange juice during the evening. Today I refrained from juices-pop etc. And will check my blood tomorrow. How long before I see a decrease in blood sugar count before going in to take care of this? I feel its self induced from a couple months of kool aid and sodas.

Hi,

I do not think, your increased blood sugar level is flu related. You may be diabetic or at least pre-diabetic, previously without your knowledge. Of course, sugar levels may be raised with high carbohydrate diets as well as for keeping the sugar level controlled, a restricted carbohydrate diet may be advised, still diabetes is not caused just by taking the sweet diet etc.

You are advised to see your doctor for this problem and specific management is advised under his guidance. Any sugar level above 100mg% (Fasting) and above 160 mg% (postprandial), should be taken as abnormal and should be taken care of, under guidance of your doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
