my son went to urgent care because from ribs to abdomen been hurting last few weeks. He s had red blood in stool a time or 2. they said white count elevated just a bit but nothing to worry about. done an xray and said nothing was wrong. He also feels nausseaus. He s 29 and has always had trouble with indigestion and is on meds for it but it s not helping. He s done some research and thought he had ulcer. any suggestions?
Hello and welcome to HCM, Elevated white blood cell count is seen in infections and leukemia. A differential white blood cell count is required to know the possible cause of elevated white blood cell count. Blood in stools needs to be investigated. Blood in stools in a young patient can occur due to ulcer (as mentioned by you), polyp, vascular abnormality, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, etc. A colonoscopy is required to assess the status of colon or large intestine to look for any of the above mentioned lesions. Associated indigestion suggests that there is some gastrointestinal tract (GIT) abnormality thus a colonoscopy is required. Pain in abdomen can be associated with the GIT problem. I suggest you to consult a gastroenterologist for clinical assessment, investigations and thus management.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
