What causes elevated GGT level in blood?

I am a 64 year old female, with high GGT (was 68 last blood test). I was amazed at this result. My cholesterol was 4.7. And I know I am over weight. I drink very little alcohol, have a glass wine about twice a month. I have plenty of fruit and green salads, limited amount red meat, and eat chicken and fish. I know don t have enough fluids, one coffee a day and that s about it, very little else. How can I lower the GGT and in what time frame can I expect a result.

Hi

I have gone through your query.

GGT is raised with a blockage in the gall duct. This is seen when there is a stone or a spasm of the gall duct. There are several causes of a gall stone. These are usually seen in women who are overweight, and have high cholesterol.

Usually, it is important to get an ultrasound of the abdomen to confirm if there are gall stones. In case there are symptoms of abdominal pain, one would need surgery to help prevent the pain and further symptoms. Please see a surgeon to get evaluated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Vignan Rachabattuni
