Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 3 year old son presented with a limp mid december. He has had 3 blood tests, the first (done in dec) showed an elevated esr only, the second (done in new year) was the same esr (52mm/h) and the 3rd (done on Tue 14th jan) showed esr of 51mm/h. No other abnormalities were detected. The limp has since (the last 2 weeks) gone. My son is otherwise healthy and there were no outward signs of injury or infection to the ankle, knee, hip or foot. What else could be causing this elevated esr?
Greetings, ESR is called erythrocyte sedimentation rate. It is a non specific laboratory tests that indicates that there is inflamation of some kind going on. If this is the only abnormal laboratory test he has had, it might be that there is some underlying inflammation. It is normal to have a high ESR under a number of conditions from having the flu to pregnancy. We have all had a high ESR at one time or another. A normal ESR is generally less than 20. There are a few genetic conditions such as hereditary spherocytosis, and sickle cell anemia that cause a high ESR. thanks and regards.
