What Causes Elevated ALT Levels?

I just had blood tests done to get some life insurance. All readings were normal except my ALT(sgbt) which was 59. I do consume beer about 2 times a week - about 6 - 8 each of those nights (so maybe 16 beers per week). I am female, 59 years old, I do smoke, and I am in excellent health in all areas and feel wonderful. I just want to know what is considered dangerously or alarmingly high for ALT(sgbt). Is a reading of 59 very bad? Thank you.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com family .
I have gone through your concern in depth .

@ SGPT level of 59 is just borderline to near normal value . It is not very
bad at all .
@ There are many reasons for the same - minor liver infection as early
hepatitis - old liver insult in form of abscess or cyst - past jaundice -
alcohol induced liver changes - cholesterol levels related - others

You do not require medical treatment for the same .
Strongly suggested to control beer consumption to protect liver from future
detrimental effects of the same .

Hope this will help you .
Feel free to ask future questions .
Thanks for evaluating my answer thoroughly .
Regards .
I find this answer helpful
