What Causes Dryness In The Throat?

Hi ,I have been smoking from past 5 years ,quite a month back when I found one day ,completely dry throat when I woke up ,I went to the doctor he has prescribed me some anti allergies ,told me it is chronic pharyngitis ..it’s been a month ...I still have that throat ..it feels all scratchy and itchy ,my doctor say it’s absolutely fine ...but I can’t understand if smoking has caused chronic pharyngitis then it can be a cancer ...moreover sometimes I feel all itchy and scratchy in my ears too but doctor say it’s all fine there too..I feel itchy while eating sometimes too?

Hi Dear,

Throat dryness seems to be due to upper respiratory tract infection leading to pharyngitis, smoking habit, acid reflex and insufficient fluid intake. I would suggest you to start quiting smoking. Take steam inhalation and do warm saline gargles. Avoid cold carbonated beverages and sharp spicy food. You should take chicken soup. If symptoms keeps on persisting visit ENT specialist once and get it examined completely as it can cause irritation and infection in throat that is lead to cough reflex, and go for certain tests like blood test, throat swab test and respiratory function test. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (amoxicillin or penicillin) and nasal decongestants.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
