What Causes Dryness Along With Chapped Lesions On Lips?

Hello there, I seem to be having a similar problem with my lips. At first, it was only at the corner of my bottom right lip where it was a cracked lesion that was also very dry and peely. I applied Chapstick to it and that seemed to help moisturize it enough for me to completely peel off the corner layer of my lip. Then, a month later, it came back but it had moved down towards the lower line of my bottom lip where it meets my skin. Again, it applied neosporin and Chapstick and it went away after I peeled it off. Now it s back again and has spread through out my entire lower lip area (the part where it meets the skin). My doctor suggested that I use 1% hydrocortisone cream which I have just applied but it feels as if it s more of an irritant. Neosporin has been helping a lot but once it dries out, it goes back to being super dry, flaky and seems to be spreading. I am anemic but I take iron pills daily. Also, I just starting taking Vitamin B just a couple days ago in hopes that this would help. Why is it spreading and what could this be?

Hi..
Thanks for your query..

As per your complain and symptoms it seems that you may be having chapped lips due to iron deficiency anaemia also called as CHEILITIS SIMPLEX..
As chapped lips occur commonly to anaemic individuals and you are already diagnosed with it..
Mostly it causes cracking of corners of mouth (Angular Cheilitis) but at times it causes chapping of the lips too...

Application of Hydrocortisone cream (Dont apply if it irritates and consult a doctor) and Neosporin can help but till the deficiency of body is not corrected the symptoms can not be completely removed..

I would suggest you to get your Complete Blood Picture (CBC) done..
Few more tests can aslo be done to find out that exactly it is iron deficiency anaemia like RETICULOCYTE COUNT AND PERIPHERAL SMEAR..

You can see your doctor and get checked for the doses of your medicine and get your problem solved..
Vitamin B and folate intake can furthur help with your cure..

Other few more precautions which you can take are..
Apply vaseline as lubricant on your ips and repeat application as you feel dryness..
Drink water as much as you can.
Eat more of bananas.
At midnight you can get up once and take a little water to keep hydrated..
do not scratch or rub your lips with towel or napkin..

Hope you get well soon..

Thanks and regards..
