What Causes Dry Heaves Along With Burning Sensation In The Chest?

I have dry heaves, some burning in the center of my chest and lots of saliva brought on by activity and exercise. It doesn t seem to matter what I ve eaten and can happen on an empty stomach. It s been going on for a couple of months but has gotten worse lately. I ve been taking Nexium but it doesn t seem to make a difference. I m 52, I don t smoke or drink, am not overweight and exercise regularly, at least I d like to. Any ideas what it could be?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The symptoms are in keeping with reflux. This can cause nausea/vomiting, burning discomfort and excess salivation.

It is treated with lifestyle changes and medication.

The lifestyle changes include:
(1) reduce portion sizes to reduce acid production. Use small frequent meals instead of large meals
(2) wait 2 hours after eating before laying down
(3) reduce or eliminate acidic/spicy or fried foods including but not limited to- tomatoes, onions, caffeine products, mint, chocolate, citrus juices
(4) elevate the head of the bed.

If the nexium is not working for you, you can try an alternative such as prilosec, prevacid etc. It is important to remember that these medications reduce acid production but do not eliminate the acid already present so they take 5 to 7 days to start to work (need to wait for present acid to go away). Should be taken consistently.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James,
