What Causes Drop In Platelet Count?

My PCP has had blood work done twice, one month apart. August 29th, 2016 and September 29, 2016. All reading were within the normal range with the exception of platelet count. In august, the numbers were 145. In September, 141. I am taking Candistat for yeast infection in my digestive tract. One of the ingredients is Pau D Arco leaf, 50 mg. I take 3 tabs a day for a total of 150 mgs. Could this be affecting my platelet count? Thank you. email address: YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

The difference between 141 and 145 would not be considered medically significant.

The normal range for blood tests varies slightly from one lab to the next but in general, the lower limit of platelets is approximately 150.

With your results at 141 and 145, this would not be considered a major change and would not be associated with an increase in bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
