What Causes Dizziness And Depression After Stopping Cymbalta?

I was on Cymbalta since the first of January. It didn t seem to improve the joint pain so I spoke with my doctor and asked if I could try going off it. He said to take one every other day for a week and then stop. I ve been off for 4 days now and it s been very difficult. I cry at the drop of a hat and my mood has been less than pleasant. I was expecting that for a day or two after stopping but it seems to be continuing. Also, I have been VERY dizzy and in fact, just fell on my front door step. Two questions... How long should I anticipate these side effects to last, and also is the dizziness caused by going off Cymbalta or could it be something different. Thank you very much.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It seems Cymbalta or Duloxetine was started for joint pain or somatic complaints with depression. Cymbalta or Duloxetine is an anti-depressant group of medicine. Now as you said, you feel uncomfortable, dizzy, and depressed. For dizziness, I suggest you to check serum sodium levels as Duloxetine is known to reduce sodium levels. And as you have stopped it your depression has come again. So, I suggest to reconsider if you continue to feel depressed or change to other SSRI group of anti-depressants only after consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Prashant Gohil
