What Causes Discomfort In The Sternum While Breathing?

I had a terrible cough that started about 2 months ago. It was always a dry cough, never coughed up any mucus, and I never had a runny/stuffy nose. It felt like just a bad tickle in my throat that wouldn t go away. It was worse at night, and I would cough so hard that my whole body ached and my diaphragm was tender to the touch. It felt like it was slowly, very slowly going away, and about 3 weeks into it, I got a bad cold on top of it. Now, I would wake up in the morning coughing up phlegm and then at night it was back to the dry tickle cough with no phlegm. The cold went away after about 2 weeks, and I still have the dry ticklish cough at night. It s not terribly bad, but it is still there. I never feel out of breath, I am not (and never have been) a smoker, I have never had a fever with this cough, and I feel mostly fine except for this lingering cough. My husband also got the cough at the same time (and we both got it from our toddler). My husband and toddler have gotten over it. Yesterday, I started with another symptom (that I think is related to all this coughing)... Every so often through out the day when I inhale deeply, I can feel almost a buzzing or small vibrating on the right side of my sternum near the bottom ribs. It s been happening more and more frequently since it started yesterday, and I noticed now that I seem to get gassy and burp a lot after I do it a couple times in a row. There is no pain involved, it just makes me cough a little more. Just looking for some advice, and any idea what this might be?? Should I be concerned?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As you explained, there might be gastric reflux or allergic problems which cause this kind of a cough.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
