What Causes Discomfort And Swelling Around The Uvula?

For about 4 weeks I ve been feeling some discomfort inside the left thyroid lobe area, and swelling behind and around the uvula (dangling bell in your throat) and frequent calcified food trapped in the corners of the tonsils (which I believe are one on each side of the uvula) - causes awful morning breath! Could this be tonsillitis? I went to ER and they didn t bother to take any tests, swabs or sonograms, etc. Are these common symptoms, and if not, what else could it be? - Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi,

From your explanation, it looks like tonsil stones or tonsilloliths. It is a potent cause for infection and inflammation of tonsils and bad breath. A sore throat that is recurring is most probably due to tonsil stones. I would suggest you remove the tonsil stones using a q-tip and in order to reduce its formation, you should do warm saline gargles.

Gargle with 1:1 solution of hydrogen peroxide and water. Always gargle with water after meals. Limit intake of dairy products. In case if they are not being removed, you should consult an ENT Physician and get evaluated and they can remove it manually using fine tweezers.

In case if still, the problem does not resolve then the last resort is to get the Tonsils removed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
