What Causes Dilated Pupils And Tinnitus In A Child?

My 10 year old has dilated eyes and said she hears a high pitch sound in her ears as of an hour ago. About 2 weeks ago she had what seemed to be vertigo which included the dilated eyes. A local EENT said he didn t see anything wrong with her ears 2 weeks ago. The dizziness has subsided, but not the eyes. What could cause this?

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. Migraine and migraine variants are the largest single cause of dizziness in children and since you have taken an opinion of ENT Doctor thus consult a Neurologist and/or visit a Pediatric ENG clinic to exclude:

i. any ear problem [ear infection]
ii. brain disturbances (migraine, tumors)
iii. any Medical Problems
iv. Psychological problems [teenagers seeking to avoid going to school
v. unknown source of symptoms

2. As the dizziness has subsided but not the eyes it do indicate a strong evidence for an organic source of his symptoms and possibly suggests either a central or peripheral source

PS. It should be remembered that dizziness in children has diverse causes so the diagnostic process must distinguish between otologic, central, medical, and psychogenic etiologies for possible line of treatment and management.
