What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing And Pain Around The Sternum After Gallbladder Surgery?

About a week after gallbladder removal surgery, I cannot eat, drink, or even swallow my own saliva without immediate stabbing pain around my sternum. I feel I need to burp but I cannot. It s a severe stabbing pain and has been going on for about a month now. It s much worse as I m eating. It s immediate. As soon as I take a sip or bite. Just swallowing anything. There is no burning sensation. It honestly feels like a severe need to burp, yet I never can. I ve tried all otc meds for gas, heartburn, indigestion, and acid reflux and none help at all. Again, it hurts as soon as i swallow anything. Even my own saliva. I am miserable. What could it be?!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, you should immediately consult your primary physician and get yourself examined for any complication or bowel leakage.

Also ultrasound abdomen and X-ray erect abdomen may be needed for any air fluid levels or gaseous distension. Such symptoms post surgery can't be ignored. Usually these doesn't follow after a gall bladder surgery.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. Dr. Saddiq Ulabidin, General & Family Physician
