What Causes Diarrhea With Blood In It After An Accident?

I was in a relatively serious car accident earlier this week, where I was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street. I was knocked unconscious, had several teeth knocked out, required 15-20 stitches to my lips and mouth and have bumps, bruises and cuts all over my body. I was released from the trauma unit at the hospital after about 18 hours. I had not passed a stool for at least 3 days, as I have been on a liquid diet and I cannot eat. However, I experienced diarrhea 4-5 times last night with hardly any solids. I cannot tell definitively, because my toilet bowls are black, but on the toilet paper, there was a red/maroon liquid. Could this be from the blood that I am swallowing from my mouth injuries or something more serious that will require a trip back to the hospital, in your 30-second opinion?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

This seems more in relation with ingested blood from the mouth (while incidence happened) passing from rectum giving this symptoms.

Right now there is no emergency to rush to hospital rather wait for 24 hours with the following guidelines:
• Consume plenty of liquids
• Soft, light diet at intervals
• Avoid to take painkillers at present
• Contact your doctor telephonically if your prescribed drugs are causing this or not
• Watch for bleeding in following stools whether the amount is decreasing or remains the same

Consult doctor later if there is more abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, and bleeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel
