What Causes Diarrhea And Elevated Bilirubin Levels?

Recently I was very sick with the flu. Did not go to doctor as I was out of state. Stools were very loose (watery) with a yellow/orange color, including a white seed-like texture. Worried that my bilirubin was high. Should I see my primary care physician?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If diarrhea is not severe and you are not feeling sick (weakness, dizziness, lethargic) then no need to consult a physician. Just start oral rehydration solution (ORS - WHO approved) prepared by dissolving ORS powder in one-liter preboiled water. High bilirubin is a sign of liver damage. If it's there you are also suffering from the symptoms like weakness, decreased appetite, yellowish discoloration of eyes, urine, and skin. If it so goes for a liver function test in the laboratory and consults a physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regard,

Dr. Hiren Hirpara
