What Causes Dent In The Left Ear Lobe In All Generations?

My wife and I just had our third child. All three have a kind of dimple on the outside/back of their left earlobe, at the top. My mother, grandmother and myself all share this trait. It doesn't look like a pin hole, more like a flat spot. If the ear was made of clay and you pushed your finger tip onto the back of the earlobe at the top, it would look like our left ear. Is this common?

I share your concern. It is a genetically determined character and as is clear from the history that all your family members have the same characteristic there is no cause for concern . Other variant is free hanging ear lobe and attached to side of the face. Well defined depressions on the earlobe is genetically an autosomal dominant character inherited in families. THey have no associated problems and you need not worry. Another thing is preauricular sinus ( a hole in front of ear ) which can at times get infected. As your case is normal genetic expression you can relax. Hope I have cleared your doubt. Feel free to ask more
