What Causes Delayed Periods?

My periods are 8 days late, I went for an ultrasound and everything was fine but my endometrium was 2.15 thick, so I was told that the delay could be because of hormonal imbalances as I am on some medication, plus earlier on the month I had taken an emergency pill, I just hope everything is okay, cause I have been experiencing cramp like pains all the symptoms I have during my periods, yet I'm not seeing them, please advice

Thanks for contacting HCM with your health concern

1. As you are on medication and have taken an emergency pill thus remember that these pills contain high dose of progesterone which prevents or delay ovulation and tubal transport and if you inhibit or delay ovulation, then you are also extending the time when your periods will restart.

2. However, one has to exclude other common causes which can delay regular period like:

- stress which disrupts the ovulation: since you are worried [under stress] which is causing your body to secrete more cortisol which delays or stops ovulation altogether causing irregular periods

3. Consult a Gynecologist for other causes of delayed periods like PCOD, being over weight, high prolactin level, pelvic infection, irregular diet, thyroid disturbance etc which can also cause irregular period.

4. check with UPT [urine pregnancy test] and repeat the test after 1 week to rule out pregnancy.
