What Causes Dark Urine And Passing Of Black Stool?

I work in a nursing home and have a patient who has BLACK urine and stools. None of the nurses have even bothered to look or figure out why or what the cause could be but I'm worried for her. She has stage 3 lung cancer. Has has rounds of chemotherapy and radiation before arriving and surgeries to remove a portion of her insides. (Can't remember what parts) is this something to be taken more seriously?

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of dark urine and passing of black stool which is a sign of bleeding mainly upper intestinal as gastritis and duodenitis. As your also mention dark urine along with black stool , it seems to me that the symptoms are probably due to hepatitis due to infection or duct obstruction. liver function test is needed to diagnose the cause of it. It can be due to bleeding ulcer too and sometimes due to constipation. It is due to lack of roughage in diet. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to take plenty of fluids in diet along with multivitamins. You should take oral re hydrating solution and along with that take diet rich in fibres. It could be due to dehydration as well due to intake of vodka. I would suggest you to visit gastroenterologist once and get complete examination done. Doctor may order Urine test for urobilinogens, blood for S. Bilirubin, S. ALT, USG of Abdomen, especially liver . You should get it monitored soon as sometimes it can cause lowered hemoglobin level in body.
