What Causes Dark And Sticky Bowel Movements In A Stroke Survivor?
my husband is a stroke survivor a year in August. His bm s are very dark and pasty and require assistance wiping/cleaning himself. He seems to be almost incontinent; however, he does not have issues with urination other than missing the toilet I thought because of his left-side neglect and damaged vision. Could his pasty & won t come out stool be caused from his 10+ daily medications? He is 55 and had stroke last August, has since then been diagnosed w/severe sleep apnea and had a triple bypass in October last year.
Hi. Thanks for your query. Noted the history related to your husband having had stroke and sticky, difficult to clean dark BM since them. As there is loss of control over the bowel movements, the biological clock also gets disturbed. The patients has no bodily movements also has a negative impact the way the intestines respond. GI bacterial flora disturbances adds to the problems. Hence my advise would be: Send the stool sample for tests on 3 consecutive days and to add on the treatment as per the reports. Add on fibers to the diet. Avoid all the foods, beverages and factors that you know of can change over the problems. Balanced diet, Vitamin A and D in therapeutic dosages is required.
