What Causes Cysts In Thyroid?

Hi Doctor, my regular doctor found 5 cysts on my thyroid 3 months ago and now there are 6 cysts so she's referring me to an Endocrinologist. Is 6 a lot and does it increase my chances of there being a problem? I do have pain sometimes but all my bloodwork was normal.

Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
To give you further information regarding to thyroid cysts is very important the description of the ultrasound.
Usually if they are over 1 cm in diameter and have some other features in ultrasound than a Biopsy with fine needle is recommended.
If you have family history for thyroid cancer than you should follow up them more closely.
The increase in number is not problematic as far as they are small and do not have suspicious signs in ultrasound.
Please do not hesitate to ask if you have further questions.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
