What Causes Cyst On The Anterior Of The Uterus With Bleeding After Intercourse?

I have been in surgical induced menopause since 2009 after they thought a cyst on my remaining ovary was cancerous - it was not. Recently had a pap smear that came back with atypical endometrial cells. Ultrasound showed a 5 mm cyst like structure in the midsection of anterior uterus. I have had some dark spotting here and there over past few years but not lately, but have had pinkish bleeding after intercourse with my husband - which by the way is painful. I am the daughter to a mother who took DES and I have never had children, but three ectopic pregnancies. Endometrial biopsy scheduled for next week. What could I be facing? A bit concerned, tho not overly freaked out. Just want to be prepared for the worse. Yes... that is how I live. :) Prepare for the worse.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

There are many reasons why a woman may bleed after sex. The medical name for this is "postcoital bleeding".

Most common is an infection, such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as chlamydia then vaginal dryness (atrophic vaginitis) caused by reduced vaginal secretions after the menopause, damage to the vagina, such as tears caused by childbirth, or by dryness or friction during sex or cervical or endometrial polyps (benign or non-cancerous growths in the womb or the lining of the cervix).

If the problem is caused by vaginal dryness, they may recommend that you try using lubricating gels. For other treatments, it would be necessary to see a gynecologist and establish the right cause first.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
