What Causes Crackling Sound From Ear?

I am 66 yr old woman in good health. I recently noticed a crackling sound coming from inside my left ear which I think comes from the lower side behind the ear. I can cause the noise by opening my mouth or by pressing on the lower part behind the outer ear. Is this dangerous? It is more noticeable in the morning rIght after I get up.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain it looks like the sound is coming from your jaw joint that lies close to the ear and can be misdiagnosed to be due to some problem with the ear..
noise on opening and closing the mouth is further pointing towards jaw related problems..

I would therefore suggest you to consult an Oral or ENT Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Panoromic x ray can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..

As of now you can take anti-inflammatory medication like Ibuprofen, muscle relaxant like Chlorzoxasone and do warm compresses over the jaw.
Take a soft diet and avoid excessive mouth opening..

The physician can evaluate you clinically and along with painkillers and muscle relaxants he can also advise you mouth guards and physiotherapy..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
