What Causes Coughing Up Of Green Phlegm?

I thought I had the flu, my dr. was overloaded with other patients with the same condition. I went to Urgent Care. They said I have a severe sinus infection. I have had 4 sinus surgeries, and many sinus infections in my life. (I m 70 yo). My question is this: how can this be a sinus infection when all the thick green secretions are going down my throat. My nose is not involved. It s clear. I m extremely weak, nauseated from the stuff going down into my stomach, no appetite. I had chills, and a low grade fever 99.1, but it left a few days ago. I have been coughing up the green stuff. The dr. gave me a Z-pak and I am slowly getting better. Is it a sinus infection?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The sinuses are 'holes' or 'spaces' in the face. They are connected with the nose that the sinuses can be infected without nasal involvement.

Runny nose and congestion is rhinitis (inflammation of the nose). Rhinitis and sinusitis commonly exist together however.

It is possible that you do have sinusitis which is commonly part of the flu. The flu can affect any part of the respiratory tract including the sinuses.

I hope this helps
